When Mike Besaw of Wausau, Wisconsin got his start with Fully Promoted, he and his wife, Becky, already owned a small business in their community. Their packing and shipping store was doing well, but they were looking for a way to expand when they came across the idea of promotional products. Mike and Becky were going to try to start a promotional products business on their own when they came across Fully Promoted, then called EmbroidMe, in their research.
After reading about the brand online, visiting some stores, and going to headquarters in West Palm Beach, Florida, Mike could tell that this was going to be a good fit.
Since he got started in 2014, Mike has built a business he is proud of. “We are most proud of our involvement in the community and the way we have helped change the community,” he says. Between Mike’s two businesses, he employs 11 people, something he doesn’t take lightly in his town of just under 40,000 people. “Owning a business gives you the satisfaction of knowing that you are supporting 11 families in your area,” he says, describing the sense of community that he strives for in his store. “Our whole community is big on buying local and we emphasize buying local.”
In addition to supporting his employees, Mike does a lot of good for the other businesses in his area. Helping other small businesses in his community market themselves is something that brings him satisfaction at the end of a hard work day.
But Mike is no stranger to hard work. His background as an entrepreneur – owning first a powersports dealership and then the packing and shipping store before investing in Fully Promoted – required a lot of hard work. It is no different with Fully Promoted, where he spends time networking, traveling to trade shows, and meeting people. For Mike, owning a business never gets boring. “[Fully Promoted] is a fun business, it’s a challenging business,” he says, “Every day is a new challenge, so it keeps the interest level there.”
He loves being a local business owner, seeing it as rewarding and satisfying work. One thing he loves is seeing his customers get excited about the products he sells them. For many businesses, promotional products aren’t bare necessities; instead, his customers are buying his products with “expendable income, so they are happy when they receive them.” Compared to items they have to buy to keep the lights on, Mike’s promotional products make his customers happy.
